I'm not a fan of winter.
And I'm not good at pretending to be.
But last year I forced myself to post something I liked about winter.....every Wednesday....just so I could convince myself (once a week) that all was well in this frozen tundra we call home.
I decided to bring it back this year.....and maybe we can share survival tips....what do you think?
Survival Tip #1: Keep Warm
uh....duh.
I grew up in Montana.
Montana knows how to do winter.
For some reason, I do not.
Living in California totally made a wuss out of me, and since we've moved here,
Living in California totally made a wuss out of me, and since we've moved here,
I've tried for the past few years to get by with just extra layers and socks, but I finally realized winter happiness starts out with being the absolute most bundled you can be. Like Randy.
This is the time of year to shop for your winter gear....over the next few weeks it will be put on super sale, just begging to be bought and wrapped around your frozen body.
1. It's amazing how quickly you can go from numb fingers and toes, to warm and cozy with just a cute mug full of hot cocoa.
2. I finally got a winter coat. No really. I have cute jackets that stores consider to be "coats", but it takes 700 layers underneath to keep my warm. My mom just got me this coat and it is warm warm warm. I cannot believe what I have been missing out on all these years because I didn't have a proper coat.
3. yoga. really. If you're feeling blah and frozen, head to a yoga class. It's amazing how just a few simple movements can warm up your joints and muscles, and even more amazing how holding poses--just HOLDING STILL--can make you drip sweat like nothing else. Bonus points for sitting in the steam room afterwards.
4. I am convinced that these are the best boots in the world. They are warm and so comfortable, I wear them every single day. They aren't too bulky to drive in like some boots are, and I'm certain they will last forever. I got them last year on clearance at REI. 1/2 off! HALF!! tip: I had been eyeing the traditional Sorels for quite some time, but found when everything goes on clearance, the original boot stayed the same price, while the newer styles got super cheap.
5. hooded scarf. I found a "scood" a few years ago at gap for $10 and I'm pretty sure it is the best invention ever. That's all.
6. The Weepies. I LOVE the weepies!! They may not physically warm my body like a puffy snowsuit, but good music makes me feel happy:)
7. So I wouldn't spend hours shoveling your driveway in these mittens, but they are perfect for everyday errands and driving around town.....and bonus that the top folds back so you can easily use your phone.
So.....to kick off our first Winter Wednesday of thismiserable wonderful season, and to celebrate
my little old blog turning ONE YEAR OLD.....
...let's do a giveaway!
I present to you......

for those who asked: the boots are HERE. I have the "jar" color.
I love it. It's the best color (which I truly believe goes with everything), and it's super soft, warm and cozy.
And I have an extra one for YOU!
Just leave a comment (leave me an email if you don't have a blog), and one person will be randomly chosen as the lucky winner. Comments close Sunday Jan 9th at 10pm.

I hate winter, too. But that's why I moved to the South! Hope this Utah winter isn't too bad...
i never enter giveaways but i love yellow and i love that scarf!
originally from Michigan, one would think I've got the winter prep nailed...living in the bible belt has turned me into "Hater of all things below 65 degrees (except MooseTracks ice cream)." I could really use that scarf, not to stay warm, but because it's such a perky color...oh random generator, pick my number, please!
I live in Australia and am currently suffering through the 4th day of above 105F degree heat but I am thinking towards the future and I LOVE that scarf and it would be perfect for when winter finally comes around!
Pick me!
I'm a Texan living in Boston, and boy am I not crazy about winter either! I love your tips, and I am definitely going to check out those boots!
Also, I absolutely love the giveaway scarf! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
bluesplash007@yahoo.com
I live in the heartland and expect COLD weather, but some days are harder than others when the temps go below zero and there's mountains of snow on the ground for weeks at a time. So having a scarf so bright and cheerful would definitely help! It looks like you and yours had a FABULOUS holiday - loved all your black and white pics!
I truly love your blog, it is so inspirational and motivational!! I live in PA and the winters have progressively gotten worse in my opinion, I just added a few of your items to my shopping list! Keep warm!
katie_huggins4@yahoo.com
I'm with you, winter is not my thing! Loved the post and I love that scarf!!!
cute everything (i was just looking at those anthro mugs yesterday!), and i love the sunny touches of yellow! stay warm and toasty, and thanks for the giveaway!
happy birthday, blog! that sunny scarf is adorable.
i love warmness! it covers up all my body flaws. ;) yellow is my favorite color, so.........ya.
happy birthday!! what a perfect scarf to brighten any day!

Like a previous persons post, I'm from Michigan, but now living in Texas the last 4 years have made me an embarrassment to my MI roots. When it's 50 degrees here I'm freezing, while all my friends back home are in shorts! :-) Love the scarf!
It is so cold in Indiana right now! I am wearing scarves constantly...and LOVE this one. :) Stay warm :)
I love scarves, and a little winter isn't so bad! I actually like the snow.. :)
I just moved to Chicago from Texas so I am quickly getting schooled in how to survive winter :) Love that color, so bright and cheery in a sea of black!
Scarves are my absolute favorite and being from MI they are a necessity! Yellow is the best!
How pretty! I'd love this scarf :)
What a cute idea to ward away the winter blahs! I would LOVE this scarf. Mustard is so pretty, but too much of it washes me out. Just a touch would be perfect. Thanks for the fun giveaway!
Happy Birthday! I have been reading your blog for some time now and I LOVE.LOVE your posts. I have tried so many of your baked items and they all have been excellent!!
Yay for a scarf!!
I remember this scarf and LOVE it! It would be the perfect way to keep warm and add color to all my winter greys.
We just moved from sunny Australia to snowy South Dakota so I'm in need of warm clothing. Your blog always brightens my day.
Darling! Fingers Crossed!
Hey lady! I'm just back from nicaragua and catching up on life and (inevitably) the cold...I'd love your cute-as-business scarf to see me through!!
Adorable post, love it. Stay warm!
Fun accessories! I love that yellow scarf, it's super cute. Scarfs are probably my second favorite cold weather accessory, right after cardigans. Thanks for the giveaway. :)
I'm with you I hate winter. Born and raised in Utah and still here trying to survive this aweful January inversion.
Woohoo! Happy One Year! Today is our NINE year anniversary, holy smokes! Went so fast. :)
I am certainly not a cold weather fan but that scarf would keep me warm in our mild AZ winters just fine.
Love the list (and boots) but love the sunny scarf! I was eyeing it when you posted those pics from your trip a few months back! Happy New Year!
SO SO cute! I need it! xoxo
I am obsessed with that Mustard Yellow! New towels, new socks, new pants, new purse! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! camiwekken@yahoo.com
How fun :) Happy Blogoversary!
Thanks for the tips! Love the scarf, too!

i want it i want it
I definitely need to add some sunny yellow to my winter wardrobe to help with my annual winter blues. :) Also, those boots are awesome. Good job getting them half off!
Gah! I coveted this scarf when you posted this picture earlier. LOVE it.
Just discovered your Blog some weeks ago. Happy one year anniversary ;)
I'm sure my girlfriend would love this scarf. Cheers
i need a scarf-it's been chilly here in vegas. the only one i have is the one you gave me last year for my birthday! and sunday is my birthday, so i'm just saying....you could make it a habit... ;)
miss your guts.
i would love a yellow scarf!!
that's an adorable scarf! i've been searching for a good one all season...
I hate winters too!!! If I could I would live in Hawaii because it stays warm year around. I love this scarf by the way!
I live in Florida cuz I dislike the cold too!!! If I wanted to be cold I'd live in Alaska!!!
I actually love winter :) I love being all cozy inside and I love the holiday starbucks drinks and I love fires - and I LOVE scarves... :) and... I just found your blog and its awesome
New to your blog and love it! Love the scarf too!
I am in CA, so this will be perfect with my "winter coat", a light sweater....
I am from Wisconsin, so if I don't like winter, there is a problem! Warm thoughts like those you have to offer ;-) would definitely help get through winter!
I love your blog :)
haha, i'm the same way. i'm juust now learning that my husband isn't crazy to wear long johns starting in november and wearing his snow coat all of the time.
i love how a hot drink actually warms you up from the fingers in. it's awesome.
love the scarf! i'm moving to argentina in four days (!!!) and leaving boston winter for 90 degree days, but with some trips to patagonia planned, i know the scarf will get good use.
what a lovely scarf!
I've always wanted a yellow scarf. Pick me! Pick me!
Love that scarf! It's so cold up here in Illinois :)
erin.cowan{at}clarke.edu
that scarf looks adorable!
mmm. i love scarfs.
and i can't believe how long your hair is! i love it.
(ps. the word verification i got was 'suckme'. yikes!)
Love the scarf...I have never felt winter like you... But here in vegas has been pretty COLD this year.. It actually snowed in the valley the other day..Hope you stay warm...
Jennie from las vegas
i totally agree with you on the yoga thing...i do it first thing in the morning and it really warms me up! :)
i live in canada, so negative temperatures with a wind chill are my specialty (though i'm still holding out on finding a sale on some sturdy sorels though...curse them for being so trendy! i can never find my size!). :)
as for the scarf, well, not that i don't already have a million (i'm a bit of an addict! haha), but i won't say i didn't covet that scarf when you posted that pic a while back!
I WANT IT! I love the yellow...I love your blog..I hate the cold.
I really could use a cool scarf as I don't have any besides my one very warm grey Gap fleece scarf, which I LOVE because it keeps me WARM! (Glad you got a nice winter coat because that is a must!!! I am a New Englander and we too, know winters!!)
Hilariously timely post for me as I sit here shivering.
New to your blog. The name got me, as I too live in a little red house & always refer to it that way.
Looks like a fun place to hang out!
Adorable scarf! Do you also have an extra pair of the boots you are wearing? ;-) Where can I get a pair. Love them!
I love that scarf!
So cute! just found your blog....love it! rachel.abelson@yahoo.com
Happy Birthday Blog!! Love the scarf, hope I win! :)
So beautiful! And I love the color!
kristin.longwell@gmail.com
that scarf IS adorable! and i love that little winter warmness stuff you put together!
Yay happy birthday to your little blog! Target doesn't have those glove/mittens anymore but I wanted them right when they came out in the fall and I'm now kicking myself for not grabing a pair! Such a cute scarf!!! Stay warm!
love scarves! longer the better!
I'd love a new scarf! Congrats on your first year!
amyrada@yahoo.com
Consider me commented.
Yes the Weepies are warming for sure!
I love that coat...in fact just might have to get it in olive.
you have such great taste!
Happy anniversary!
I'd love a new scarf :) I'm the only woman in my house and I need as much girlyness as I can get :)
Congratulations on your first year!
I'm not a fan of winter either, but I'm not hating it as much as usual this year. I'm also trying to pay attention to the little things that make it bearable, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you post!
Great collection of goodies!
well...i have like a ton of scarves, but that's not stopping me from possibly getting one more! Plus I don't have a yellow one, so... might as well add to my choices right!?
happy one year - yay!
I too hate winter, enjoy scarves and love mustard yellow -- evidently, this scarf and I are meant to be. ;)
I am loving the yellow you've shown! May be time to break away from basic, getting very boring, black!
Oh, I hate to say that I'm just the opposite. I grew up in Wisconsin and now live in southern Texas. These warm winters kill me. Thankfully we could travel home for a proper white Christmas, because goodness knows that'd be a serious fluke here! Always looking for a sweet scarf though, especially since we're moving to northern North Carolina this year!
Cheers,
*Heather*
i love it! its too cold in jersey
I am from California and I'm going to school in Provo so I'm still trying to properly prepare myself for winters here!
Yellow is my FAVORITE color and I believe that you can never have enough scarves! :D
I want the scarf.
But let's talk about your fab boots in that picture, shall we?
wHerE'd ya get them?!
LOVE that scarf. Nothing like a cheery yellow to ward off evil winter blues. So please throw me into the give-away! Thanks for doing this. Love the blog.
adorable scarf!!!
Well I guess this is my "coming out" for trying to anonymously be a follower of your blog! LOVE THAT SCARF!! Thanks for your inspiring art of food, writing, photography, and more!
um, yes please.
So cute! I live in a wintery city in the mountains...and sometimes it's hard to look cute all bundled up! This would definitely add some cheer to dreary winter days :)
Chances look slim here, but I just wanted to agree with you on my "love" of winter. The one thing that I don't like here is it gets so cold, but there is no snow. I don't know if Montana is the same, but boy do I miss California... and I grew up in UT, you think that I would be use to it.
we know how to do winter in Chicago too - and I've hated every second of it since moving here 7 years ago!!! I would adore that scarf and assure you that I would give it the very best home possible! :)
Living in Minnesota, you kind of have to learn to love (or at least tolerate) winter, otherwise you are miserable for 4 months of the year. Scarves are very necessary for keeping warm in zero degree temps (like today). I love the color of this one!
i love this, sheena! i have finally begun to find peace with winter... making the best of the dark & cold months with warm fires, cozy blankets, and the promise of spring! your roundup of favorites is great. that scarf looks so cozy!
What a sunny, happy scarf! This cold Canadian would love to win!
Love the scarf...keeping my fingers crossed! blog is private so email me. kkluber@gmail.com
comment #89? it's possible! At least you don't live in Rexburg...
That scarf looks to be the perfect warming accessory out here in the frozen land of Logan! The yellow would help to break up and brighten the grey days!
I find the best thing to do is pranayama breath when you're outside. Not breathing in or out through your mouth and only your nose helps keep the heat in your body. I hardly talk to my boyfriend when I'm out in the cold :)
eeek! that scarf is amazing
Thanks for the chance to win.
I actually love winter. Believe it or not, it's my favorite time of the year. I break out the warm clothes, fuzzy socks and hot chocolate to sit in front of the fire place with my best friend/husband and our two fur babies. I get to spend early nights by christmas lights baking cookies and breads for gifts, even after Christmas. Everyone seems to slow down enough to spend long nights having quality time, playing board games and eating dinner together. I LOVE winter!
joanna2729@aol.com
Love your blog and you, Sheena! Thanks for the chance! That scarf is to die for!
I absolutely hate the cold too! But luckily I live in Alabama so I don't have to deal with it.
Love love love the scarf, and the boots! Yellow is such a great color to beat the winter blahs!
nichole.horton@gmail.com
love that scarf. yellow is such a good color for the winter. adds some sunshine!
winters are horrid here in ohio.
my fav keep warm & toasty habits
-- warm towels from the dryer after i get out of the shower.
-- battery operated feet warmers in my rocky boots.
--my dog sleeps on my feet to keep my toes warm.
LOVETH! would love to HAVE ONE! xo-jeni
This is the most comments I've seen! Wow.
You know, I guess I didn't realize you lived in CA, I thought it was Utah this whole time. Don't ask me why....I think I read too many blogs! hehe.
That's nice of you to do a giveaway though!
My email: rachaelborders@gmail.com
I have an addiction to scarves :)
Britta.Zimmer@gmail.com
Ugh, winter. The next two months are going to be brutal here.
I think that cheery scarf would certainly brighten up my day! :)
LOVE your list, and I love that you are finally embracing winter in all it's layering goodness! <3
Now, gimme that scarf! ;)
happy blog birthday!
that scarf is adorable :)
that scarf is adorable!!! love the color.

LOVE the scarf. it's freezing up here in idaho... it'd look lovely on my neck.
I live in Southern CA and it's freeeeeezing for some reason now! What the heck lol?! Thank you :D
The cold is killing me! I love your blog and I would love this scarf!
I love your site and really admire your creativity... and of course, like everyone else... adore the scarf!
happy new year.
Upstate NY is pretty miserable this time of year as well. Looking forward to the spring time!!!

I've been living in California for 9 years... and I went to visit Seattle this past December and boy was it COLD! I would love to have a warm and cozy scarf to keep me warm on the occasional cold winter night in Cali. :)
I know in LA you aren't supposed to be cold at anytime during the year, but I am always freezing! So you can pretty much expect to see me with a scarf around my neck during the winter months.
Thanks for sharing your favorite scarf, this is a great giveaway.
I have to echo about the boots! THE best boots on the planet and I have the exact ones! LOVE LOVE... wear them every day!!!! and mmm yellow! love.
Love the scarf and now I'm on a target run for those cute mittens tomorrow :)
you are adorable... and that scarf is so cute! It's the prefect dose of sunshine for a gloomy winter's day!
mellow yellow scarf, please fly my way!
-xoxo, Mary
maryalison4@gmail.com
Love scarves...congrats on your anniversary!
WHOA, will you even see my comment amongst the masses?! If my number comes up for the scarf you can give it to person #2 since you've already hooked me up in the scarf department this season :) (even though I, too, adore that yellow scarf!).
But anyway, I want a nice winter coat so bad now. Tiffany has a nice down coat that looks really similar to yours from Eddie Bauer and she said she doesn't mind the cold weather at all because it's so warm. I think I might be done with the coat I got as a junior in high school. It's time. And if you hear of any sorel half off deals this year, tell me!!
Such a sunny color for these dark winter days...
yellow is my favorite color!
love that scarf (and your boots!)
yes please! sah-weet giveaway!
Oooh! Love me some yellow warm cutie scarf!
I am new to the blogging world and I first started just reading two blogs daily trying to keep up with being a momma, a full time student and working two jobs was so stressful. But at the end of the night getting to read your post made my day alittle stress free. Now this year I started one myself. Thanks for the daily reads, i truly love reading whats going on in your life!
Ugg! I hate winter too! Always have and still stuck in it here in Alberta, Canada. Would love to win the scarf!
Yellow is my new fav color! I'd love a new scarf!
Did you know that I only have one scarf? I totally deserve this!
cmmcminimy@yahoo.com
I know where you are coming from. I moved to California two years ago with my husband, but we are from Michigan. Now when I go back to visit, I am such a wuss! I love all your winter weather gear :)
Sheena ... You are groovy and cool. Love so many things about you... but LOVE your writing. Speaks to my soul...
Cold in Oregon this year! Need new scarf.
alysmcknight@yahoo.com
I love reading your blog(s) and I love giveaways even more!
Love the yellow scarf
scarves are my favorite accessory ever! i wear them year round every. single. day. and snoods are even better! (sort of like a scood but really more like a neckwarmer). love your blog <3
Love your winter choices. I generally like winter--as long as it doesn't last too long.
Mmmm...yellowy goodness. I could use a little shot of sunshine to brighten up my Michigan winter wardrobe!
OOOhhh....love that scarf! Pick me! Pick me!!!
you are lovely. i love all your suggestions, and good music (weepies most definitely included) is a must! especially for those dance parties to warm chilly bodies.
I love your blog and that scarf is adorable! I also learned this year what I was missing out on by not having a "real" coat. --Mandy aparker1023@gmail.com
wahoo! scarves are my favorite and that one is SO cute!
yay! something that would fit me! i'm very pregnant, but scarfs and shoes always fit :)
What a beautiful scarf! Hope I win!
Sheena...
Okay really?! 141 comments and counting... and for a scarf?! AND... i'm making it 142, its a pretty darn cute scarf. I'm just as bad as the rest of them!
I just recently moved to Vancouver, WA from Fresno, CA. A BIG change! Sunny all the time, to raining and misty EVERYDAY! Would a scarf help me with this big change of scenery and weather? Yes.. YES, in fact it would!
Anyways...I always check up on your blog. Thanks for sharing your stories, your ideas, your little insights and most of all your photography! You're inspiring, sister! So thanks for sharing :]
I am an all year round scarf wearer! I love anything yellow!
cute scarf. and you are very brave putting your 6th grade picture up! We all remember those days! casidyanne at hot mail dot com
WOW... thats a lot of comments. Maybe I will get lucky. haha
I grew up in California. When I moved to Ohio for college I went out and bought the warmest pair of boots I could find. They were these giant, terrible, clunky, hideous beasts. I knew nothing of winter boots, so they seemed like they'd be perfect for snow. Once winter actually hit, oh god, they were terrible to wear. I reverted to what we'd do when we visited snow growing up: tennis shoes with plastic bags over my socks.
Oh yeah.
Thankfully I'm back in Cali now. No more snow for this girl.
We just moved to Canada's East Coast so I'm preparing myself for a damp, wet, slushy, snowy wild winter and that scarf would make a stylish addition to my winter weather arsenal.
(PS As much as I dread the damp winters of the east - I LIVE for massive winter storms that make you feel like you're living in Siberia!
If I win, you can e-mail me at wendy_prince@hotmail.com :)
Hi, my name is Laura and I'm writing from slightly less cold Italy (I live near Venice, and here it's around 0-3°C!). I spent a semester in Sweden two years ago, and I went directly to Timberland, because I had no experience with snow (I live on the seaside) and the brand seemed ok. Well, I found a pair of knee-high boots with fur on the inside that kept me warm even at -18°C, and I wear them in Italy as well! :)
I'm a Cali girl who moved to Utah and now lives in China...the COLD part!
But your blog always makes my day!
you are right it is the best color... :) thanks for the chance. xo
cute, cute, cute!
Me me me! I love yellow :)
hooray!! happy blog birthday, sheena! i am super super happy i found you last year. when i think back to last winter, i think about reading your blog. it was a cold, but really happy time. which is why i'm really excited that winter wednesdays are back!! and excited that you shared all your toasty faves, which i am now going to try to hunt down. :)
ps. your scarf looks perfect in every way.
great giveaway - sent you an email. (no blog)
A real winter coat is a must! And they don't actually sell these in sunny CA, which makes surviving real winter tricky! I agree, you've got to break down and get the real deal. :)
I truly believe that a cute scarf creates the illusion of winter in Texas, where I live. So it might do well in my possession. :-)
I am a scarf aficionado. I love them in every form. I don't have a cheery yellow one, so it would be a perfect edition to my collection.
Thanks for the opportunity!
I just came across your blog through a friend's comment on facebook. I am enjoying your photos and reading your words. I'm also loving your yellow scarf and I think it would look pretty cute on me too. :)
I love your blog and scarves! I'm trying to stay warm right now...
after seeing the post that this pic was first on i searched and searched for a new perfect yellow scarf. in my regret i did not find one. so if i do not win, please tell me where this perfect scarf can be found!
