somewhere in wyoming.....

....and even a few miles of utah.
the road crosses back and forth across the state line approximately 37 times.

I took a quick little trip over the mountains this weekend to see my sissy
and her (very) new (extremely) teeny little girl.

I love driving.
loooooooove.
long open roads.
tiny towns where everyone waves as you pass through.
(literally, everyone waves at you)
stopping for cows. horses. you-name-it standing on the road.
loud music, windows cracked.
thinking thoughts.
driving through spring spring winter spring winter spring.
and lots and lots of cows.

It sounds funny that I actually get excited to spend hours in the car.
I think it has to do something with where I grew up.....to get anywhere, you had to drive.
Not just hop in the car, a few stoplights and you are there--you had to driiiiiiiive.
To get to my friends' house involved two lane roads, stretches of dirt and gravel, and dodging deer around each turn.
So anytime I can get in the car and away from the crowds and traffic, I jump at the chance.
I look forward to the day when we can load up the car and drive the country--explore the towns, people, and tiny two lane roads that stretch from west coast to east.
for now, we'll just enjoy the roads around here.

I have lost count of how many times I have photographed this tiny house outside of Randolph, Utah. Every time we pass by, I have to stop for just a minute.....I love it so much.
I want to know who built it.
when.
how long they lived there.
how many kids they had.
what they planted in their garden and how they cooked it for dinner.
so many thoughts to think.....I'd better keep driving.

Do you like road trips?
What are some of your favorite places to drive?

I'm with you on driving long distances in the car... I always pack a ton of different things to do, but I usually end up gazing out the window the entire time! It's just so peaceful. (especially in the backseat!)

We always drive along the East coast when we go on road trips... from NC to New York, or NC to Florida. Going through the mountains of West Virginia is beautiful, but I would LOVE to drive somewhere out west...

Also, do you have a public Instagram account? I would love to follow you! :)

I love road trips, LOVE them. I love seeing things I have never seen before. I love seeing how beautiful this country truly is. Someday I'm going to go on a road trip across the country, from the east coast to the west coast and I'm going to make sure we hit up route 66 along the way. I absolutely love driving along coast lines and seeing the miles and miles the ocean goes, knowing there is so much more out there.

Wyoming is just as it says -- "like no place on earth".

Growing up there was wonderful, really...and more than anything I miss those skies. I actually wasn't fond of the distances between friends and places, but perhaps I have changed my view over the years. Life is just as much about the journey, isn't it? : )

i love that adorable little house! i also like to think about the people that used to live in old houses, what their lives were like, and how it came to be that they left their home for somewhere else. it's sad to think like that sometimes, but it really does grow the imagination, i think. :)

also, i've never learned how to drive, but i really want to! road-trips always look like so much fun, and so meditative.

You come from a long line of drivers--I think it's in our genes! Driving quiet backroads is one of my favorite things to do as well, although taking the entire family along does ruin some of the bliss. :)

you should go knock on their door and present them with one of your many photographs of their house and get talking that way. i actually did that once in VT. i took a photo of a tree house that was in these people's front yard and knocked on their door afterwards to tell them i took a photo and if it was okay to use it for a school photo journalism class (which was true). they were all excited and wanted the photo haha! and we got talking about it and i got to know more about them and their tree house! just sayin ... :)

Some of our best memories are our long drives between Utah and California to visit our extended families. Good music, good conversations, crappy gas station treats.

My sister's in-laws always fly them out to visit them in San Jose. I have often thought about how much they are missing out on when they fly like that instead of drive.

Wow, what great photos. Love all that wide open space. We often take this back road out of our mountain town and down into the Ojai Valley. It feels like we see each different part of CA from the rolling mountains to the foothills, from the valley to the beach. It's also a peaceful road where we often times see just a handful of cars passing us along the way.

I am a road tripper. In fact, I journeyed out by myself with my three little ones under age 5 to make the long trek down to Austin, Texas last week. The drive was beautiful! The country, the wide open spaces, the slow progression from browns to greens to flowering trees... It was lovely. I must say thought that my favorite state to drive through in Pennsylvania. I've never done an East Coast leaf tour, but even in spring that place is beautiful and unique from the mountains of the West. There is so much to see in this beautiful country.

I had to laugh when I read your post because I despise road trips, hahahaha. I think I've just done the Phoenix to Provo to Phoenix to Provo to Phoenix to Provo...toooo many times (too much boring desert). My most recent (and hopefully last ever, haha) trip from Provo to Phoenix took over 15 hours, due to my new teensy baby in the car (it usually takes 11-12 hours). So, kudos to you for loving road trips. Maybe someday I'll be able to. :D

These photos are stunning. Makes me want to ditch the city and get out on the open road.

Love those photos! I agree with you, I love road trips! Although so far I've never really taken the time to stop and enjoy it! First because I'm always just on the highway so I can never see any little towns, and two, because I'm focused on getting there in time! But I would love to take a road trip and really explore the different areas around me.

I drove from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada down the Oregon coast and into Trinity County, California last summer. My favorite part of the drive was in California on hwy. 3 north of Weaverville towards Siskiyou County and Callaghan. It is not a drive for the faint of heart (or any vehicle pulling a trailer, as the signs say), but it is amazing!

I found your blog via eggshell blue :)

I absolutely love these shots - and that little abandoned house is enchanting. I would have to stop every time too!
