just a few things.....

first things first.
THANK YOU!!!
Thank you thank you for such a great response to last week's announcement of the
One by One Project! (check it out HERE if you missed it).
Thank you for your comments, emails, ideas, and thank you for grabbing buttons and your help spreading the word. Thank you for sharing on twitter and facebook and pinterest and all the other little corners of the web--thank you! I am so excited for your help with this project, and I have so many ideas swimming around in my brain--this is going to be a lot of fun.

a little (ok, kinda big) announcement
My posts around here the next few weeks are going to be very sporadic......you see......we are moving! As in, packing up (oh dear) and moving. This little red house has served us well, but it's time for a new adventure in a new town (and coincidentally in a house that is even littler, and red as red can be.)
 www.inthelittleredhouse.blogspot.com
We have been feeling the need to move out of the city and simplify, and finally decided to take the plunge. This new (super old) little house will be a stepping stone for us the next couple of years, and we look forward to all we will be able to experience there.....it really will be an adventure!
We will be downsizing our home, learning to garden at a higher altitude, and finishing out the remainder of the school year testing the waters of homeschool.....so much to learn.
I can't wait!

and one more....
I realized a while ago that I have the BEST blog readers. In the universe.
You always have the smartest things to say and I love that I can rely on you for answers.
These next few weeks I may have to call on you for help.....
for example:
When we moved into this house six years ago we had a nearly two year old, a bun in the oven (about to explode out), and hardly any furniture at all. We had moved around several times our first years of marriage, and with few belongings....we were pretty good at it.
But now.....
well....
I don't know how to move now!
Share your moving tips if you are pros  (ahem, Hayley)

I'll see you around here and there the next few weeks--you can always find me on instagram because I can't go that long without taking a picture....
@_sheenarae

see you around!

Go on Craig's List or KSL and search for "moving boxes". People are always trying to get rid of them after moving.

Unpack the kitchen very first.

Bite the bullet and rent a moving truck. It's appealing to use friends and their trucks and trailers, but a moving truck eliminates stress and feeling guilty for using other people.

How exciting you want to homeschool! I was homeschooled from Kindergarten through my senior year of high school, and I don't regret it at all. I loved being at home as well as being able to learn more at my own pace. It's definitely not for everyone, but I think you will particularly enjoy it!

Congrats!
We moved into our own little red house 7 years ago this month. It was our second move in 6 months!
Go to your local mall or shopping center for boxes. Apparel stores get shipments usually 3-4 times a week and will have perfect boxes for packing.
Pack the stuff you can live without immediately to get a good start and purge, purge, purge what you no longer need instead of dragging it with you to the next house. My brothers helped us move and around 6 hours in would growl at me every time they walked by saying,"If I carry one more box labeled Garage Sale I'm going to kill you!"
I shoulda purged first! ;)

Good Luck!

sooooo excited for you guys. i love a fresh start and all the de-junking that goes along with moving.

lets figure out how to garden at a higher altitude together!!! i'm scared.

yes we are moving pros. our 7 year old is about to live in her 9th house!!!!

biggest tip? start packing early. like i usually do it 3 weeks early. it gives you time to carefully pack all your precious cake plates and framed pictures before the mad dash at the end when things just get randomly thrown in a box.

use towels, blankets, sheets as buffers for breakables if you don't have packing paper.

Congratulations! That's so exciting! Wishing you and your family all the best!

I agree, rent a moving truck so you can get everything at once!

Also I love having all of my childrens clothes organized into those clear (so you can see whats in them) plastic bins.

I liked getting all of my moving boxes in one size, but if you are trying to not spend as much and if your new home isn't too far away keep your clothes on hangers and load them in the back of the car.

I always use newspaper to pack up my dishes, and then saw a good idea of using paper plates in between instead? This may be a little easier because I always have to rewash clean dishes after they have been sitting in newspaper.

pack your kitchen last, duh.

Im a little jealous, I love clean starts and organizing. I wish I had some amazing tips but you will remember the craziness of it once it starts again. happy moving to you guys!!

ps congrats on homeschooling, I know you have been looking forward to trying it out and good for you! I think your children will thrive at home and you will just love it. what a perfect situation! <3

Oh! P.S. If you use the sticky-note idea ... tape them down with packing tape. Or else, those cute little squares will be all over the place! ;-)

Yay for homeschooling! :) I was home schooled for my entire education and I loved it. I got to excel at subjects I loved; and the ones that I struggled with, I got to take extra time on until I understood it. You get one on one teaching, which is awesome!

Most importantly, I was able to learn about God freely and was taught that my faith affects everything, including education.

Good luck with the move! I hope it goes very smoothly! :)

When I moved almost a year ago, I started packing about a month before the big day. Things like books, craft supplies (I wasn't going to have time to craft because I was busy packing for the move), extra linens, rarely used kitchen items. I was more than halfway done 2 weeks ahead of time, so I could get started. I definitely didn't leave things to the last minute, and that helped a ton.

I agree with the unpack the kitchen first comment, and when I came to see my apartment, I took pictures of the configuration of the cabinets and then made a 'map' of what would go where in the kitchen, so that other people could even help put things in the right places.

Finally, I had awesome help, and a couple of people stayed to help, and the first thing they did was assemble the beds and put the bedding on. It was so nice to be able to just work all day, and then fall into bed at night, without having to make beds. So if you're going to be doing that yourself, I say do that right after the kitchen. Or before.

P.S. I am so jealous you are moving to the other side of the mountain. Sure wish we could!

YAY. I'm all about higher altitude + less city living. How charming you found another little red house. We had our fill of SLC & inversion a couple years ago. We seriously downsized - sold nearly everything - & moved to AZ with only a truck, a flatbed & what would fit in our two vehicles. It seems daunting now but is going to feel so good to purge, and reassess priorities & belongings. Not sure what tips you are after. Going through everything quickly helped me get rid of things. Committing to not fill our new home with lots of "stuff" has made all the difference. And good, sturdy moving boxes are definitely worth it.

Congrats on the big move! I will be interested to read about your gardening adventures. We're still learning the difference between SLC and Park City is drastic when it comes to growing yummies in the garden.
Good luck with the moving! I just love the unpacking part, finding a new home for every beloved thing.

Congratulations!!! So excited for your family! I've been wanting to move to the country for some time too with chickens and a garden, but I don't think it's going to happen any time soon for us so I am going to live vicariously through you! I can't wait to see what you will be posting once you get settled in at your new little red house!

We have moved 10 times in 14 years of marriage...here are a few additional tips (and a few repeats I'm sure) to add to all the other great tips already mentioned.

* Start packing NOW. Pack up everything that is nonessential...pictures on the wall, books, most toys, stuff you don't use much in the kitchen, out of season clothes, and all decorations.

* Two days before the big move pack your bags as if you were going on vacation with all the clothes, shoes, and toiletries that you will need for a week and then pack up your bathroom and closets completely.

* Start deep cleaning the house soon. I usually like to clean my oven, refridgerator, and showers a few weeks early and then all you have to do is just wipe it all down really quickly after you load the truck. Oh, and don't pack the cleaning supplies...keep a small box or laundry basket with essential cleaning supplies for after you load the truck and your broom, dust pan, rags, rubber gloves, and vacuum.

* Start trying to eat what's in your fridge, freezer, and pantry now. We use a couple of coolers to put all the food that's left from the fridge and freezer for the day of the move to transport it, but plan on giving some away if you have a lot of sauces and condiments still left....or since your move is local I guess you could just load them in a box the day of and still bring them with.

* And I definitely agree with the commenter above about having the essentials box that you open first with some dishes, soap, toilet paper, paper towels, real towels and washrags for baths/showers, some favorite toys, and cleaning supplies.

Ok, that's all I can think of for now lol. Good luck!!!

my favourite thing to do when moving is use plastic bags (there are always so many of them!) to wrap my breakables in, before packing them in their boxes...and then once you unpack at your new place, you've got places to stash your garbage already + don't need to buy garbage bags for a while!

pack a suitcase for a week, with clothes/undies/toothpaste/painkillers/etc so you're covered for at least the first week of unpacking. (i also include my phone/charger and laptop/charger, because those always go missing! ugh.)

rubbermaid bins are amazing. for EVERYTHING.

well, those are all the tips i can think of...good luck with packing + moving...i can't wait to see your new place! :)

One really easy thing to do:

Label all boxes with numbers and have a notebook that you carry with you explaining what is in each box and where it goes in the new house.

Also, have a box that is basically "a house in a box" Have things in there like a set of dishes, hand soap, dish soap, other cleaning products, anything you use on a daily basis, etc. Then that way you have what you need until you get all unpacked.

Happy moving! and congrats!

Congratulations!! I always take the chance to get rid of things when I move. All things that haven't been used in 2 years, go to people who need them... or to the dustbin.... then things that haven't been used in 1 year, I consider if I will need them, and if not... then the same thing than before :)

Congratulations Sheena! Happy for y'all! You have received lots of great advice, and the only thig I would add is to leave out some of your most used cookware for dinners te last few nights and make it the first box unpacked. I didn't the move before last and had to keep going through boxes to find what I needed! Ha!
Have a blast on this new adventure!

Moving... how fun. Being a military wife, I've had my share - some have been a moving company moving us, others we've done on our own. Here's some stuff I've learned:

1. Create a binder or file folder to contain ALL important paperwork (Social Security Cards, immunization records, school records - although if you're homeschooling that might not be an issue, important health care documents, birth certificates, marriage certificate, important financial records, etc. Keep this with you at all times. When you move there are so many things to register, and having these handy is a plus!

2. Be careful using used boxes. Sometimes they can be infested with little creatures you might not want in your new-to-you house.

3. Buy a big roll of that saran wrap looking stuff used for moving. We got some at u-haul. It is really handy for wrapping up mattresses, couches, etc. It helps keep them clean while loading/unloading/on the truck.

4. We like Penske more than U-haul.

5. Costco sometimes sells moving kits that have something like 20 boxes, bubble wrap and permanent markers - that is the best deal I can find on new boxes.

6. Make sure to label each box well - both on the top of a box and somewhere on the side. Also listing the general contents helps. The top of the box is my husbands idea - because when someone is carrying the box it is easy to look down and see where it goes.

7. Pack the truck TIGHT. The tighter the better - that way nothing rattles around.

8. When unloading, someone (probably you!) should just be directing traffic!

9. When packing up your current house, pack a box, then carry it to the garage. It makes it so much easier for the loaders if most of the stuff is already in the garage.

10. If you prepare yourself ahead of time that not all will go as planned, you will handle it better when the time comes! Nothing about a move is 100% smooth! At least not in my experience.

I'm sure there are many more I'll come up with - I might add them on later!

Hey! Just wanted to let you know that I've been reading your blog for a while now. It is always inspiring--so overwhelmingly inspiring sometimes. So I am grateful for that. It also makes me happy, and I so appreciate your authenticity. So thank you for writing and sharing. I think you are an incredible person, and your family is adorable. Good luck with the move!

Congratulations on embarking in a new adventure in your life! Anyway, when you move out, the first thing you need to do is to make a checklist of all the things you need to accomplish such as the bills to pay, things to bring and leave behind, the labels of the boxes you are bringing, etc. I hope you all the best!
