behind the square

last month. post-hike, pre-sushi selfie. Because it's 2015, so why not.

Social media is great, right? It's the perfect way for me to stay connected to friends, see the world from different points of view, I can use it to work from home, and let's all agree....it's fun! It's also the WORST....we all paint this picture of the perfect little world we live in--only showing our best of the best moments....it's not at ALL a real representation of life. And I think sometimes it's too easy to get caught up in that, don't you think?

You've heard the term "Keeping up with the Joneses", right? Did you know the phrase dates back to the early 1900s? I mean really, what was it that Jones Family was doing that was worth keeping up with--growing better potatoes? Riding a faster horse? Now, with social media, we know every little detail of the Joneses life. Where they are going and who they are with and how they got there! What they are eating and when they are eating it! What their perfect house looks like, what their perfect kids look like, and what their perfect face looks like, because now the Joneses share lots of pictures of their outstretched arms and close-up faces. They definitely didn't have to worry about selfies back in 1913.

Those Joneses are BUSY, and they are everywhere. Doing everything. And rubbing it in your face.

Obviously social media wouldn't be any fun if we all just shared things like the dirty (mismatched, obviously) socks all over our house, eating pancakes (again) for dinner, and late nights studying drug interactions for school (this involves mild anxiety attacks)....so let's not do that (phew!) But let's all just try to remember that the lives we see every day in squares aren't entirely real--everyone has all kinds of mundane and ugly behind-the-scenes stuff going in their lives, they just choose not to share it.

So in an effort to be transparent for a brief moment, let me tell you about how my Tuesday and Wednesday went down. After class I threw on my running clothes with hopes of a quick run while the kids went to soccer practice. But by the time I got them over to the fields, my day caught up to me and I was so tired, I couldn't even imagine running, let alone leaving the parking lot.....sooooo.....I did the next best thing, and curled up in the backseat of my car to take a nap while I waited for them.  I woke up groggy with a seat belt imprint on my leg, and promised myself I'd do some kind of workout at home. So naturally I walked inside and finished off the cookies from the weekend and did some pull-ups. And by "some" I mean three, because have you seen my arms? I'm not really a pull-up-kind-of-gal.
I then stayed up until 1a.m. working on homework, closed my eyes and woke up  (I swear it was 2 minutes later), and had to start my day again. I spent 9 hours in class, 4 hours in the car, and sustained myself on granola bars and a hearty dinner of chips and salsa.

Glamorous.

Want more honesty? I try to post several times a week on my IG account, and guess what? Sometimes those photos are just pictures I took over the weekend. So yeah, I am not a true INSTA-grammer. I am more of a WEEK-OR-SO-LATER-grammer. I know, I know, I'm blowing your mind right now. So rather than posting a selfie of drool running down my cheek as I desperately try to rest my brain in the backseat of my car, I'll post a picture of myself out doing something I love, or my kids being adorable, or basically anything to distract from the craziness that is my life sometimes.

And now you know a piece of my life behind the square....just a few things to keep in mind as you admire Mr. Jones exotic vacation or Mrs. Jones seemingly easy breezy and stress free lifestyle.
Those Joneses are liars.

Tell me about your day.
Your REAL day, not your internet day.
Your day behind the square.

This is so true! And I used to be stuck in admiring everyone else and what they're up too. Now I am a lot better at being inspired by, and loving all the beautiful images but still remembering that it's only a very small, extra beautiful and styled part of their entire lives. Heck I know I do the same with my photos!

Today I awoke at 03.40 in the morning because my cat wanted to go out. I then had a really hard time falling asleep again cause a lot of work-related stuff kept my mind very busy. I think I finally fell asleep again though and I then got up at around 07. Had leftover pancakes for breakfast, worked by the computer, shot some new images, took a shower, continued working by the computer and now I'm having leftover pizza for lunch :P

Spent half the night up with a congested child who could not sleep only to get three hours of sleep and leave for a business trip. Probably will drool all over the person city next to me in the way to small airplane seats.

Always a great read!

Woke up in Virginia at 7:50 which is 5:50 Utah time (aka toooooo early), we're headed to the airport pretty soon to catch our plane back home, with a layover in Orlando. We came here for the Ironman, but it was cancelled due to the hurricane. That's been pretty crazy and kinda scary trying to get out of here before it hits, but it's all working out. This is my husband's second ironman he's trained for and both have been cancelled on him. He has the best attitude of anyone I know. We were able to visit DC yesterday and that was really cool!

Up at 4:30am to meet up with friends for a Spin class. Back home for the crazy get 3 boys and myself out the door routine. Work in the nurse office at school, pick up groceries, after school, throw snacks at the boys, quick get homework done and head to soccer practice. Whew! Run 8 peaceful, blissful, catch my breath miles while they practice. **The time I hold out for all day** Depending on the day, an ice cream stop on the way home.

While I hate the glorification of busy, this is our season. I know someday I'll miss it. The time we spend in the car driving to practices and such, has led to some of my favorite moments. Jamming out to their favorite songs and singing loud with the windows down, catching up on their day. I'm figuring out, it's about finding the small moments in the craziness that make it doable.

Love that you are posting again!

no one wants to see me behind the square these days. ugly nauseated days with lots of tv, lots of complaining, very little productivity. (smiley face emoji.) i keep deleting my instagrams, even the positive ones. i'm having a hard time with it!

Today is the last day my boss is on maternity leave. I'm so sad for her and her baby, so so happy for me. She's been gone since July, and the other person we worked with left for another job in August so I've been on my own for 8 weeks. I'm so ready for some help because I'm exhausted and I hate how cranky I've been. Light at the end of the tunnel though. And it's fall in Montana so that's always amazing. Trying to focus on the positives.

Ha, this is so great, so great because it's real life, the stuff we don't usually share! I woke up with a horrible stomach ache yesterday and just wanted to lay in the fetal position on the couch all day long. But I have 3 boys under 3 and that was impossible. As much time as I could find I just played on the couch with a blanket over me hoping to hide myself from the babies, soon enough they'd come crying/yelling tugging the blanket off me to get my attention in hopes to be played with or fed. I was dizzy and wanted to pass out during all feeding sessions of the day. The 2 year old watched TV way too much that day in hopes to keep him confined, happy, and out of trouble. We all took a 2 hour nap thankfully enough in the afternoon until my husband came home from school. I survived but oh boy am I thankful for good health!

I always love your posts. Let's see...mostly I've been busy planning lessons for a group of "Nature Preschool" kids I lead with my 3 year old. Busy busting through Costco on the first day of the month. Meal planning. Worrying about what I am going to wear in our upcoming family photos - heaven knows I am not very polished or stylish, but we haven't had pictures since two kids ago and are paying a lot (for us) and I want my kids to think I'm pretty even if I have wild hair and only wear flip flops and cut offs. But last weekend was the real doozy. I had a migraine that made me puke and knocked me down to fetal position for two days. That's tough when you're the mama to 4 kids 7 to 11 months. But yeah, life! The good, the bad, the ugly - and yes, a lot of beauty too 😉

One of our cars is way more comfy for napping than the other. Guess which car I drove today with a fluffy blanket in the back? I'm seriously looking forward to my lunch break, since it's 65 degrees outside. Car naps are the best and sometimes they just get us through that rough patch of the week (AKA Monday). Thanks for making me feel more 'normal' with this post!

It's worth noting that in order to prove I'm not a robot, I had to choose all of the images with PANCAKES. Two comments in a row! ;>

LOVE this! You're absolutely right that we shouldn't measure the success of our days by the images we see others post on Facebook or instagram...but somedays I forget...

Lately, I've been feeling overwhelmed and without focus, which translates to stress eating in front of Netflix, and playing Best Fiends on my phone...until way passed my bedtime...! Thanks to you, I'm going to give myself a GENTLE push to find my focus again...:o) Thank you!
